GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Re: GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7

Post by MShamburger Thu Mar 30, 2017 6:11 pm

1. Discuss what is meant by this statement: "Technology is used as an accelerator, not a creator, of momentum!"
This statement speaks to the author’s contention that great companies do not follow the ‘fad’ of new technology just because it is new and innovative. The great companies use technology only if it links to their overall game plan (what he calls the Hedgehog Concept). In other words, the technology has to be relevant to the work that the great company is already doing. It has to work well in the framework that is already in place. If it does not, it should not be used. But if it does, it can become an accelerator and the great companies will not only utilize it, but become a pioneer in its use.

2. What is the technology trap? Explain.
Reliance on technology alone is not an asset, but rather a liability. If it is used correctly and tied directly in to the company vision and plan, then technology can be of use. It becomes an accelerator. But if it is thought to be the sole answer to a companies’ problems, if the technology stands apart from the mission of the company, then it will harm the company.

3. Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people. Do you agree or disagree and explain:
I agree. Technology will have no effect whatsoever on personnel. Sure, they can be better at using different technologies (or worse at using them), but this is not a primary indicator of the employee’s value to the company. Just as technology can be an accelerator of the company at large, it can make an individual’s performance better. But also, as reliance on technology can be a liability to a company, if it is the only talent a person has, he will not likely be the “right” person for the job.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Re: GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7

Post by SWallace Fri Mar 31, 2017 8:19 pm

1. Discuss what is meant by this statement: "Technology is used as an accelerator, not a creator, of momentum!"
Technology, just for technologies sake, is not what makes good companies great. Many companies tend to “jump on” or embrace whatever new, fancy “shiny” technology comes along. By doing this, they lose focus on what their Hedgehog Concept is and as the technology fades, so do their profits. The Good to Great companies that were used as examples in the chapter all used technology to enhance or build upon their Hedgehog Concept. They studied and planned on how best to use the technology that was available. I liked the analogy that they used for how Walgreens incorporated the whole “dot.com” phase/frenzy as first they learned to crawl, then walk, then run.

2. What is the technology trap? Explain.
Many times Technology is seen as the solution to any problem. Get the best and newest technology and your company/business will be GREAT. But as seen in this chapter, this is not the case. Although technology played a major part in many of the Great companies, and they had some of the “newest and advanced” technology available, that in itself is not what brought about the company’s success. Instead it was the people, the culture, and their determination to stay focused on their concept that brought about success.

3. Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people. Do you agree or disagree and explain:
I agree that technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, or turn the wrong people into the right people. Even though you may be able to use a wide and extensive array of technology does not mean that you have the Leadership qualities that are required for Level 5 leader or to be the “right” person. Technology in and of itself, does not instill the self-discipline, drive, and passion to see your vision through. Instead, you just have the ability to put on a “flashy” show.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Good to Great Chapter 7

Post by CAnderson Tue Apr 04, 2017 3:53 pm

1. Discuss what is meant by this statement: "Technology is used as an accelerator, not a creator, of momentum!"

When  the internet was first "discovered, many companies thought that "new technology will change everything".  The author stated that many business gurus believed that they should be there first and fast and you will win.  As long as people said something was related to the internet (this new technology) everything was great.  Mediocre companies react.  Great companies respond with certainty, according to the book's author.  Technology is important after your company is moving in the right direction.  Do not let technology drive you or your business; rather, you use it to drive to drive or accelerate your business.

2. What is the technology trap? Explain.

The technology trap is one that many companies fell into.  They became infatuated with technology or the idea of what technology would do for them.  These companies thought that technology would be the primary tool that would lead them to success.  Those type companies rely too heavily on technology and what others are doing, with obvious negative consequences.   They did not pair the use of technology with other best practices.  Good to great companies are able to adapt.  Walgreens, for instance, didn't run into the technology craze.  Rather, they crawled, walked then ran into the technology era.   Good to great companies slowly adopted technology.   They did not forget the Hedgehog concept.

3. Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people. Do you agree or disagree and explain:.

I agree that technology cannot make you a Level 5 leader.  As with many good to great companies, the use of technology alone does not make a company great.  Likewise, its use cannot make you a Level 5 leader.  Level 5 leaders are able to use technology appropriately to further their companies' worth and elevate their leadership qualities.  Level 5 leaders, according to the author, have a will or resolve to do whatever it takes to be successful and/or produce results.  Use of technology alone cannot put the right people in the right seat on the bus at the right time.  When used in the right manner, technology cannot hurt your Level 5 leader status.

1. Technology is the means, not the end.

2. The technology trap lies wherein the hedgehog forgets himself and wants to be a fox.

3. Technology can be used to improve a process, can increase efficiency, but it can also become a distraction.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Re: GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7

1.  Discuss what is meant by this statement: "technology is used as an accelerator, not a creator of momentum!"
When used right, technology becomes an accelerator of momentum, not a creator of it.  The good to great companies never began their transitions with pioneering technology for the simple reason that you cannot make good use of technology until you know which technologies are relevant.  Just the mere fact of having technology does not impact a company.  It is when technology is relevant to and  fits directly with a company's concepts that it can be used as an accelerator.

2. What is the technology trap? Explain.  The technology trap is the realization that technology by itself it not the primary cause for either greatness or decline.  When used right, when linked to simple, clear, and coherent concepts rooted in deep understanding technology when benefit the company.  But when used wrong - when grasped as an easy solution, without deep understanding of how it links to a clear and coherent concept - technology simply accelerates your own self-created demise.

3.  Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people.  Do you agree or disagree and explain.

I agree with the statement.  Technology can be used to enhance skills, create and produce documents that will assist in the delivery of work, and as a tool to research information for job performance, but it cannot make you a Level 5 Leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Re: GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7

1. Discuss what is meant by this statement: "technology is used as an accelerator, not a creator of momentum!" Technology isn't necessary the mother of all inventions, yet it's the thing that makes inventions better. It can be compared to the odd adage said about business, "if you don't grow, you die" This can be said the same in regards to a business attempting to maintain in a society where new processes is constantly being created. Yet the author warns that in order for technology to assist with your company, you must have a good foundation. Technology is only as good as the foundation that it's assisting.

2. What is the technology trap? Explain. This is the idealization that since we have all this great technology, we can in essence, take our hands off the wheel. It goes on to suggest that some companies become to reliant on technology, and thus stray away from there core and grass root values that the company strived on. It states that a good company should embrace technology for what it's worth, but don't forget where came from with boots on pavement.

Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people. Do you agree or disagree and explain.
I definitely agree with this statement. Technology is great, and it makes doing your efficient, but if you don't have the general concept, drive or determination, have technology means nothing. You would be resemblance of an individual with a 2017 Bugatti with no license. Technology should assist and better your business, not control it. People have to have a basic understanding of what it is they are doing, not allow the technology to do all of it for them.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty TECHNOLOGY - CHAPTER 7

Post by April.Nobles Wed Apr 05, 2017 8:48 pm

I have to first state that I was excited to read this chapter, as it was about one of my most favorite things - technology! Yet, I also realized that technology is only a tool. It cannot make someone or something great, just because technology is present or implemented into it's concept. You all live this daily, more than probably any other group of teachers in America. You don't have access to technology when teaching your students, yet many of you are still GREAT teachers. Why? Technology isn't necessary to be a great teacher. Does it help us locate resources or create things for our students that help develop concepts and skills more quickly than old-fashioned research? Yes! That's it! Great teaching isn't built on technology, rather technology is simply a tool to increase productivity and sometimes, student engagement.

1. Discuss what is meant by this statement: "Technology is used as an accelerator, not a creator, of momentum!"
The text speaks of taking the exact same companies who were leading the competition through the use of technology and handing the technology to their competitors for free. They'd fail, right? Wrong! The text says that none of the GREAT companies became great simply because of their use of technology. Rather, they all became pioneers in the application of their specific technology and saw to make it "fit" their company.

2. What is the technology trap? Explain.
The technology trap refers to the belief of companies and individuals that technology is going to make or break them. The text states, "thoughtless reliability on technology is a liability, not an asset." Admittedly, the author states that when used right, technology can accelerate companies forward. Yet, when used wrong, with no deep understanding of how it links to a clear and coherent concept - it accelerates your own demise.

3. Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people. Do you agree or disagree and explain:
I believe that technology cannot make you a level 5 leader. I also believe that it can't turn wrong people into right people. Can it help? Yes! But, the underlying layers of "greatness" must be present before technology can either help or hinder that person's leadership abilities.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Response to Kenya

Post by April.Nobles Wed Apr 05, 2017 8:51 pm

Kenya,
I love your statement about an individual with a 2017 Bugatti, yet has no license. What an effective comparison! You are so right! If you don't have content knowledge, if you aren't driven to help your students succeed, you are not going to be great.

Technology cannot make you a level 5 leader, nor can it turn wrong people into right people.  Do you agree or disagree and explain.

GOOD TO GREAT! CHAPTER 7 Empty Response to Saundra

Post by April.Nobles Wed Apr 05, 2017 8:54 pm

Saundra,

You are so right about technology, without the self-discipline, drive and passion, just allows you put on a "flashy" show. Sometimes those "not in the know" see the bells and whistles and think, "Oh, he/she must be great! Look at all that technology!" Yet, we, as seasoned, professionals know that they are simply that - bells and whistles. Flash with no substance!
