PLC Strategies

Post by April.Nobles on Mon Jun 20, 2016 8:43 pm

On Friday, you were introduced to three new strategies.
1. Big Paper
2. Save The Last Word For Me
3. Identity Chart

Reply to this post with the strategy you are most likely to implement in your own classroom. Tell us (1) why you selected this strategy and (2) how you plan to use it in your classroom. Then, respond to two of your peers.

The one I think I liked the best and that would work best with my students is Big Paper. I like that it is mostly "anonymous" --that they could express their thoughts without any pressure. I think i might first try and use this with a current event , posing an open ended question or two that would result in ongoing discussion. I also want to try the save the last word for me strategy. Although I liked the identity chart, I found it the least challenging.

I like the idea of starting with a current event or open-ended question to get them accustomed to the strategy, especially something they are very passionate about. Good idea!

PLC Strategies

Post by CAnderson on Thu Jun 23, 2016 10:35 pm

I liked the Save the Last Word for Me strategy. It can be used to make sure everyone in the class has a chance to voice their opinions. Some may be too "shy" and get left out. They are not able to be left out in this case. Everyone has an opinion and has to share. In class, I would use it and have one group respond at a time. This allows everyone to be heard and everyone can hear what others are saying.

Dana, I also like the big paper. I enjoyed participating in it. If everyone uses the same color marker, it can be anonymous if need be.

I liked the big paper best and it is the one that I would like to implement first. I think I'd rather different colors of ink so that students will have to support or defend their opinions in the verbal activities.

Carol, I liked the save the last word for me as well. I plan to use the big paper with my lower level readers first and save the last word for me with the more independent readers first.

Thanks, Dana! Years ago my grandson said that if he could change my name it would be "Angel," so when I saw this avatar it was a no-brainer.

Wanda, I can see your point with the big paper. You have to defend your opinion. So we see that things can be adapted for the population.

I really enjoyed all of the strategies and I hope that everyone will get a chance at some point during this new school year to implement them all. All of the strategies lend themselves to be easily changed to fit each persons individual classroom needs.

I am most likely to use the "The Last Word Strategy."  I really liked this strategy because it gives everyone a chance to participate and "forces" people like me (who love to talk) to stop, be quiet, and listen to the others in the group without responding immediately, lol. I would use it with a group and have the people responding give supporting details.

I like your response, Dana, about using the Big Paper and it being anonymous. I would switch up ink colors so that it would be even more anonymous. Another cool way to use it might be to have a "general discussion" with different classes over a couple of days and let the different classes respond.

I agree with you Carol about using the Last Word strategy especially with the clients we deal with. It gives everyone the opportunity to be heard and to express their opinions.

I will likely use Big Paper because it looks like something the students would enjoy and it is a great way for them to express themselves.
I will probably use it as a pre-writing exercise.

Identity Paper

Post by Kenya.Huggins on Mon Jun 27, 2016 4:13 am

Identity Paper I felt was the most relevant one.  Not only did it involve recalling skills,  it also gave a visual for students who may have otherwise been too shy to openly participate.  It also satisfies the common core model of all student actively engaged.

Dana, this is the one I chose, too. I believe the guys will enjoy it and it will stimulate some thoughts for a writing exercise.

This is a good point about Last Word. I have some students who are reluctant to participate (perhaps not wanting to be embarrassed). This could help them open up.
